PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for driving a plasma display panel are provided to employ a switch having a low withstanding voltage by lowering the voltage of the switch installed between the energy recovery circuit and the drive integrated circuit. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus and a method for driving a plasma display panel includes an integrated circuit, an energy recovery circuit(60), a set-up supplying circuit(62), a set-down supplying circuit(67), a switch(Q7) and a switch controller(64). The integrated circuit drives the scan electrodes. The energy recovery circuit(60) supplies the sustain voltage to the integrated circuit. The set-up supplying circuit(62) supplies the rising ramp waveform to the integrated circuit during the set-up period. The set-down supplying circuit(67) supplies the falling ramp waveform to the integrated circuit during the set-down period. The switch(Q7) is installed between the set-up supplying circuit(62) and the set-down supplying circuit(67). And, the switch controller(64) controls the state of the switch(Q7) corresponding to the voltage supplied to the integrated circuit during the set-down period.
