PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program download system which can improve the reliability of data received, speed up sending/receiving processing and simplify the device structure. SOLUTION: The system sends a file to be downloaded while adding, to the file, information on total line numbers of the file, compares the total line numbers of the received data and data indicating the total line numbers of the received data, and permits the update of a nonvolatile memory only when these coincide with each other. Further, the system may calculate the sum of an area having the received download file stored therein, write the calculated sum in a sum storage area of the nonvolatile memory, and calculate the sum of a program area at the time of each starting up of a device and/or for every certain period to perform self-diagnosis.
