PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seal reading method capable of accurately reading a seal impressed to a work without causing increase of cost. SOLUTION: In this seal reading method, an image of a sealed face s of the work W impressed with the identifying seal is picked up by a camera 3, and the image is processed by an image processor 4 to read the seal. The image pickup of the sealed face s is executed with the sealed face s illuminated from a nearly vertically direction to eliminate shade of a processing flaw in the sealed face s as thoroughly as possible.
