PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having high response speed and a wide visual field angle and to provide a manufacturing method of the liquid crystal display effective in cost reduction. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display of a vertical alignment system having first and second substrates and a liquid crystal interposed between the substrates, alignment layers arranging the directors of liquid crystal molecules along the normal direction of the substrates are formed on the first and the second substrates, respectively, at least one alignment layer of the alignment layers consists of a polymer film 5 having long side chains and high hydrophobicity and a slope region 6 having side chains shorter than the side chains of the polymer film 5 and sloping the directors of the liquid crystal molecules with respect to the normal direction of the substrates is formed at a part of the polymer film 5. The side chains of the polymer film 5 are represented by -(CH<SB>2</SB>)n-(CF<SB>2</SB>)m-CF<SB>3</SB>(wherein, n denotes an integer of 2 or more and m denotes an integer of 7 or more) or -(CH<SB>2</SB>)p-CH<SB>3</SB>(wherein, p denotes an integer of 7 or more) and the side chains of the slope region 6 are preferably -OH groups.
