<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceramic raw material used as a silica substitute and utilizing a large amount of alkali-containing glass such as waste glass and to provide a ceramic sintered compact. <P>SOLUTION: The alkali component is removed from an alkali-containing glass powder to prepare a ceramic raw material of an alkali content of 3 wt.% or lower. It is desirable that the alkali-containing glass powder is adjusted to a mean particle diameter of 1 to 20 μm, and then is subjected to the removal of the alkali component. It is desirable that the alkali-containing glass powder is a powder of waste glass. It is desirable that the removal of the alkali component is effected by using hydrogen chloride gas produced from wastes containing a vinyl chloride resin.
