PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of growing a carbon nanotube on an ordinary metallic substrate. SOLUTION: In the invention, a method of producing a carbon nanotube including the following steps is provided, a metallic substrate is provided, a carbon source gas is provided: the surface of the metallic substrate is oxidized to form an oxide layer, a catalyst layer is formed on the oxide layer, the carbon source gas is introduced to grow a carbon nanotube, and simultaneously, the oxide layer is reduced. By the oxide layer formed on the metallic substrate, a failure action of the metallic substrate to the catalyst can be avoided, and, the carbon nanotube can directly be grown on the metallic substrate by the reduction of the oxide layer into a metal after the growth of the carbon nanotube.
