PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a buffer seal provided with structure without causing pressure accumulating phenomenon or abrasion of a heel part due to lubricating defective even in use in a high-pressure load state. SOLUTION: This buffer seal 13 is provided on a cylinder 1 on the side of an oil chamber 2 over a main seal 14 to slide in contact with a piston rod 5 movably inserted into the cylinder 1 for sealing a gap between the cylinder 1 and the piston rod 5 while preventing direct addition of high pressure on the side of the oil chamber 2 to the main seal 14. The buffer seal 13 is provided with a base part 16 of a circular form having the heel part 16a on the inner circumferential side, a main lip 18 of a circular form as well raised from the inside of the base part 16 to slide in contact with the piston rod 5 on an inner circumferential surface to seal a gap, and a lip part 19 projected on the inner circumferential side of the main lip 18 inward. On the heel part 16a, an oil wettability maintaining layer 24 formed of material capable of maintaining oil wettability of the piston rod 5 at least is provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
