PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely carry out data erasing even in the presence of a startable drive and a recovery area while enhancing the degree of freedom in selecting a data erasing range. SOLUTION: In partition checking, MBR of an object hard disk is read first (S501), and a partition type is discriminated from four partition tables in the MBR (S502). Normally only one basic partition exists in one hard disk, but since two basic partitions exist in the hard disk with the recovery area existing, in detecting it (S503), an alarm to the effect that the recovery area exists, is displayed (S504).
