A display region that displays an image includes a plurality of pixels which are disposed in a matrix. The pixels include a first pixel with a first gap for interposition of a liquid crystal layer between an array substrate and a counter substrate, and a second pixel with a second gap that is smaller than the first gap. A columnar spacer for creating a gap between the array substrate and counter substrate is disposed not at the first pixel but at the second pixel, and creates the second gap.
