A piezo-electric actuator (22) has a generator (26) that sets up longitudinal oscillations in a knife (18) which is axially pre-tensioned and applied to a sticky carpet-like food mass. The piezo-electric drive is linked to the knife blade (18) by a sonotrode. The oscillator (26) is fixed to the knife and a base frame (16), and operates at about 40 kHz.
