<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and a control method for the apparatus, whereby even in case sheets are conveyed in an overlapped manner in both cases of one-sided mode and double-sided mode, the sheet conveyed in the overlapped manner is securely ejected without stopping the apparatus, and a missing page is prevented. <P>SOLUTION: An overlap conveyance detection means is disposed such that a relation between time T1 needed for a part of a photoreceptor electrified by an electrifier to rotate until the part reaches a transfer position where a toner image is transferred to a transfer sheet and time T2 needed for the transfer sheet to be conveyed from the overlap conveyance means to the transfer position is T1≤T2. A sheet conveyed overlapping another sheet is further conveyed without being involved in image formation on it and ejected out of the apparatus. At this time, supply of a high voltage to the electrifier, a development device, a transfer device, and a separation device is stopped. In the case of the double-sided mode, determination is made which one of the circulating sheets is overlapped. Images are copied on both sides of the proceeding transfer sheet and then it is ejected.
