[Also in Division B3] Apparatus for rolling comprises at least one pair of rolls 11, 12 with means to prevent lateral spread of the material being rolled. The apparatus is suitable for rolling iron powders, ceramic powders, and for cladding ceramics with metal sheathing. The lateral spread is prevented by metal bars 16 which move with the work and are restrained by grooves 14 in the rolls. A space 15 is left between the bars 16 and the top roll to allow roll gap adjustment. The rolling of iron powder may be at 2400‹ F. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), lateral spread is prevented by continuous belts (21). Profiled rolls may be used for rolling complex shapes using lateral edge restraint. An embodiment particularly suitable for rolling powders, Fig. 4 (not shown), has a pair of endless belts (24), (25) to convey the powder to the nip of the rolls.
