<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector such as a high-accuracy thin rear projector which can be easily assembled and installed and which comprises an inexpensive projection optical system. <P>SOLUTION: The projection light PL projected onto a screen 14 by a projection optical system 25 is linearly polarized light having the polarization direction along the longitudinal direction of the screen 14. Thereby, the reflectance on the back face of the screen 14 is kept low even in the both ends in the lateral direction, and loss in the light quantity of the illumination light in the case of transmitting the screen 14 can be decreased.
