PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically record contents continuously from the state just before the hit of a power source after the power source is recovered when the power source is hit because of a power failure or the like during the recording operation of the contents. SOLUTION: Contents inputted from a video input terminal 12 and an audio input terminal 13 are encoded into MPEG-PS and recorded on a hard disk 28. When reproducing the contents from the hard disk 28, the contents are decoded and outputted onto a monitor 42. Simultaneously with recording of MPEG-PS, INDEX data for referring to MPEG-PS are also created. When the power source is turned on, the INDEX data are scanned to search a temporally discontinued point and when the temporally discontinued point is found out, write of MPEG-PS is automatically started from that position.
