PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing cellulose acetate useful as a low cost biodegradable plastic by using bagasse, kenaf, reed or rice straw as a raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing cellulose acetate is characterized by steam cooking 1 kind of a material selected from the bagasse, kenaf, reed and rice straw at 150-350°C in a pressurized container under 15-29 MPa, filtering with a filtering device to obtain a solid material, adding acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid to the solid material to perform a dehydrating acetylation treatment.
