PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely decide character strings in prescribed columns on paper sheets without burdening an operator. SOLUTION: In the sorting system, a recognition section 101 recognizes the character strings corresponding to addresses and the character strings corresponding to names from the information read by a scanner and forms a plurality of character candidates for the individual characters constituting the character strings of the names at this time. A registration section 42 registers the combinations of the character strings of the addresses recognized by the recognition section 101 and the character strings of the names including the plurality of the character candidates in an address and name database 43. At the time of sorting processing, the information on the paper sheets is read by the same scanner and is recognized by the same recognition section 101. In case of a failure in the recognition of the character strings of the addresses, the character strings most approximate to the character strings of the names recognized by the recognition section 101 are retrieved from the address and name database 43 and the addresses which are the combinations with the retrieved character strings are obtained.
