An escalator has a plate-shaped electrical contact element that activates motion. The contact element has lower (3) and upper (1) metal plates. The upper plate has an array of dimpled projections (4a, 4b) and rests on a honeycomb panel (2), which in turn rests on the lower plate (3). The lower plate rests within a surrounding frame (5). The upper metal plate edges overhang the frame.
