PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly convert color image data to data expressed by the presence or absence of dot formation. SOLUTION: A plurality of adjacent pixels are collected as a first-class block and an error diffusion method is applied for deciding the presence or absence of dot formation in units of blocks. Image data after color conversion used for the decision are compressed according to the presence or absence of edges in the block for temporarily storing into a memory and are read from the memory as needed for deciding the presence or absence of dot formation, thus avoiding complexity in the decision of the presence or absence of dot formation performed in units of dots and achieving quick decision. Additionally, the image data are compressed according to the presence or absence of edges, thus quickly performing read and write to the memory, quickly performing decompression, and hence quickly performing processing for allowing the color image data to be subjected to color conversion for converting to the data expressed by the presence or absence of dot formation without making complicated processing contents.
