PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that colors are mixed easily when one recovery cap is shared among a plurality of heads. SOLUTION: The recovery operation comprises a first step for covering the nozzles of a recording head 34 with a cap 116a and performing suction from a nozzle through the cap 116a by operating a suction pump 120 connected with the cap 116a, a second step for separating the cap 116a from the nozzle following the first step, a third step for cleaning the periphery of the nozzle by means of a wiper blade 114 following the second step, and a fourth step for sucking ink in the cap 116a by operating the suction pump 120 following the third step.
