摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium by which the coercive force of a magnetic recording layer is increased; the squareness ratio of the medium is enhanced; and the coating thickness of Ru or an Ru group alloy being a non-magnetic intermediate layer is reduced. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording layer is composed of: a non-magnetic substrate 1, a soft magnetic lining layer 2 provided on the non-magnetic substrate 1; a soft magnetic permalloy-based underlayer 3; a Co layer or a Co group alloy layer 4; an Ru or Ru group alloy intermediate layer 5; a magnetic recording layer 6; a protective film 7; and a liquid lubricant layer 8. The underlayer 3 is made of a permalloy-based material having soft magnetism. The Co layer or the Co group alloy layer 4 uses a soft magnetic material consisting of an alloy formed by adding one kind or more of materials selected from B, Al, Zr, Mg, and Si to pure Co, CoFe, or Co or CoFe. The soft magnetic Co layer or Co group alloy layer 4 is inserted between the underlayer 3 made of the soft magnetic permalloy-based material and the intermediate layer 5 made of an Ru or Ru group alloy material.
