PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a decrease in transfer efficiency and a decrease in picture quality in secondary transfer when an image carrier and a transfer member move in contact with each other. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with the image carrier 1 which carries an image directly or indirectly and the transfer member 2 which nips and carries a recording material 3 with the image carrier 1 and transfers the image on the image carrier to the recording material 3, and the transfer member 2 is provided with a resisting force imparting means 4 which imparts resisting force in the opposite direction to the moving direction of the image carrier 1 and moves the image carrier 1 and transfer member 2 at the same speed. Further, the transfer member 2 is provided with a shearing force imparting means which moves the image carrier 1 and the transfer member 2 at the same speed and imparts shearing force to an image between the image carrier 1 and the transfer member 2 in the moving direction of the image carrier 1.
