摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and especially thin projector in spite of constitution where illuminating light is modulated by a reflection type panel. SOLUTION: The illuminating light from a light source (10) whose intensity distribution is made uniform by an integrator (20) is guided to a reflection type modulation panel (40) by an illumination optical system (30). The illumination optical system includes a relay lens group (31), two prisms (34 and 35) and a condenser mirror (36). The prisms (34 and 35) are opposed through a minute void, and positioned between the panel (40) and a projection optical system (50). The illuminating light from the relay lens group (31) enters the prism (34), is reflected on one surface, then totally reflected on a TIR surface and further reflected on the condenser mirror, totally reflected on the TIR surface again, exits from the prism (34) and is made incident on the panel (40). Video light from the panel (40) enters the prism (34), is transmitted through the TIR surface, passes through the prism (35) and is made incident on the projection optical system (50).
