A data processing system (5) for transforming a set of financial instruments (Fig. 2) into a compensated form is disclosed. The financial instruments have the form of a unique identified code, a country of origin, a relevant industry group name, the quantities of shares on issue, and a contemporaneous price. The data set is transformed into one of a smaller order such that a single compensated quantity is determined. The process of transformation is initiated by a client (22-28) specifying a country to be "domestic". The server (6) operates on the input data set to test, for each sub-set of instruments within each group, with that there is adequacy of the domestic financial instruments within that group, and if not, to account for shortfalls from non-domestic instruments in the respective group. The output transformed data set provided to a client (22-28) includes a calculated quantity of domestic instruments where there is adequacy in any group and a quantity of non-domestic instruments where there is a shortfall in any group. <IMAGE>
