PURPOSE: A device and method for detecting an edge for a mobile robot is provided to enable the robot to safely run along the edge by detecting the edge with infrared sensors. CONSTITUTION: A device for detecting an edge for a mobile robot(100) is composed of first and second infrared sensors(1,2) attached to the front of a robot body, third and fourth infrared sensors(3,4) attached to the right and left of the robot body, and a micro computer. The first and second infrared sensors transmit/receive an infrared signal, and detect the edge ahead. The third and fourth infrared sensors transmit/receive an infrared signal, and detect the edge right and left. The micro computer rotates the robot counterclockwise if the first and second infrared sensors detect the edge ahead, and controls the robot to go straight ahead if the third and fourth infrared sensors detect the edge right and left.
