PURPOSE: A robot cleaner and a collision detecting method thereof are provided to precisely control the moving direction of the robot cleaner by measuring the variation of acceleration with the variation of electric charge. CONSTITUTION: A robot cleaner is composed of an acceleration sensor(100) attached to a cleaner body and measuring the variation of acceleration with the variation of electric charge, an A/D converting unit(200) for converting an acceleration signal into a digital signal, and a micro computer(300). The acceleration sensor is axially attached to the predetermined position of the x-axis, y-axis or z-axis of the cleaner body. The micro computer compares the digital signal with a setting collision data, and detects the collision of the robot cleaner on the basis of the compared value. The micro computer processes the digital signal, precisely computes the intensity of the collision, and controls the moving direction of the robot cleaner.
