PURPOSE: A cyanine compound, an optical filter containing the same compound, and an optical recording material containing the same compound are provided. The cyanine compound has improved light and heat resistance, the optical filter is useful as an optical filter of an image display device, and the optical recording material is useful in production of an optical recording layer of an optical recording medium. CONSTITUTION: The cyanine compound represented by formula (I) is provided, wherein ring A is benzene ring or naphthalene ring; R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, halogen, nitro, cyano, C1-C8 alkyl, C1-C8 alkoxy or C6-C30 aryl-containing group; R3 is hydrogen, C1-C8 alkyl or C6-C30 aryl-containing group; X is oxygen, sulfur, selenium, -CR4R5-, -NH- or -NY'-; Y1 and Y2 are independently hydrogen or C1-C30 organic group; R4 and R5 are independently C1-C4 alkyl or benzyl, or R4 and R5 form C3-C6 cycloalkane-1,1-diyl together; and Y' is C1-C30 organic group. The optical recording material contains the cyanine compound of formula (I) which is used in the optical recording layer formed on the substrate in the optical recording medium.
