PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel are provided to remove the error diffusion noise generated by the multi-tone display process such as error diffusion process. CONSTITUTION: A method for driving a plasma display panel includes the steps of: constructing one field period being a time representing one image by N number of sub-field periods(SF1¯SFN); and performing the gray level display on the display by the length of the sustain period in each sub-field period. The method is characterized in that the luminance is increased by turning off another sub-field period with adding the sub-field period m-1 turned off luminance level at the luminance level m, if m is larger than 0 and equal to or smaller than N.
