A metal cutting tool having an indexable cutting insert retained in an insert pocket of an insert holder. The cutting insert has two opposing side surfaces with a peripheral edge surface extending therebetween and a plurality of cutting portions. The peripheral edge surface has a plurality of abutment sections, each abutment section lying on a portion of a sidewall of an imaginary regular polygon. A plurality of cutting portions extend outwardly from the imaginary polygon and are equal in number to the number of side walls thereof. Each abutment section is located between two cutting portions. The insert holder has an insert pocket in which the cutting insert is retained with the peripheral edge surface being abutted at two abutment sections by two support walls of the insert pocket, the support walls being fixed and integral parts of the insert holder. |
