Process comprises impregnating a metallic hydrotreatment catalyst (A), in oxide form, with at least one phthalate diester (I), optionally dissolved or dispersed in a liquid. The esters residues in (I) are same or different 1-18C linear or branched alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl, or aralkyl, optionally containing one or more heteroatoms. An independent claim is also included for a method for sulfuration of (A) comprising impregnation with (I); treatment with a sulfuration agent (II) and then treatment with hydrogen, where the two last steps may be done simultaneously.
