PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make excellently performable optical system adjustment such as AF (automatic focus) control with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: A video signal which is outputted from an HDTV (high resolution digital TV) camera 25 and contains a high frequency component, is outputted to a focusing control circuit 11, a system conversion circuit 27 and an image pickup mode selection circuit 26. Namely, the video signal in which the high frequency component is not eliminated by the system conversion circuit 27 such as an HD-NTSC (high definition-National TV system Committee) down converter, is inputted to the focusing control circuit 11 as it is. Thus, when performing focusing control using the focusing control circuit 11, highly accurate focusing control is performed with a simple configuration of utilizing the high frequency component as it is, without adopting a complicated configuration of optimizing various parameters for each photographing mode (television signal standard).
