<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a browsing device that can optimally output a document of plaintext. <P>SOLUTION: When scrolling or the like on the browsing device 1 causes the next character information to be read in, a character information reading part 3 reads in one character at a time from a document 2, and if the character is a hard return character, ends the reading, the results of which are accumulated in a character information accumulation part 4. When the character information accumulation part 4 is filled with characters to capacity, the reading is also ended, and a string back to a delimiter such as a punctuation mark from the last reading is accumulated in the character information accumulation part 4. A layout image creation part 5 creates a layout image according to the character information accumulated in the character information accumulation part 4, and saves it in a layout image saving part 6.
