PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron-based component excellent in sliding comformability and corrosion resistance and having a desirably adjusted hardness in the proximity to the surface. SOLUTION: In the iron-based component, the surface of iron or an iron-based alloy is coated with a nickel layer containing carbon or a nickel layer containing carbon and phosphorus; a nickel diffusion layer with a nickel content lowering toward the deep part is formed in the iron or iron-based alloy base; and carbon is contained in at least the surface layer of the nickel diffusion layer.
