PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a time period for completing recording by a desired recording resolution without carrying out a complex operation. SOLUTION: This recorder performs the recording by scanning a carriage having a recording head mounted thereon on a recording medium and comprises an encoder film having slits provided at predetermined intervals along a moving range of the carriage and a sensor which is attached to the carriage and outputs detected signals (201, 202) according to the detection of the slits. A plurality of registers (321-324) each having a predetermined value set as a maximum value of a cycle are provided to the recorder. When one time previous cycle of the detected signal of the sensor is divided to generate a recording timing signal for the recording head, one of the registers is selected with respect to a term wherein the speed of the carriage is varied and the value set in the selected register is divided to generate the recording timing signal.
