PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens having high image quality and suitable for a compact 3CCD. SOLUTION: A 1st lens group G1 fixed with reference to an image surface includes a lens 11 having negative refractive power, a lens 12 having positive refractive power and a lens 13 having positive refractive power, and a 2nd lens group G2 has negative refractive power as a whole, and moves on an optical axis so as to bring variable power action. A diaphragm is fixed with reference to the image surface. A 3rd lens group G3 includes a lens 31 having negative refractive power and a lens 32 having positive refractive power, has positive or negative refractive power as a whole and is fixed in an optical axis direction at the time of variable power and focusing. A 4th lens group G4 has positive refractive power as a whole and moves on the optical axis so that the image surface fluctuated by the movement of the 2nd lens group G2 on the optical axis and the movement of an object may be kept at a fixed position from a reference surface.
