PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a line image scanning type picture display device which can be realized compactly at low cost and which can display an improved picture by effectively reducing deformation of two-dimensional display picture. SOLUTION: The line image scanning type picture display device is structured to display a two-dimensional picture on a screen by transmitting light from each optical modulation element in an optical modulator 5 as object light by means of an image forming lens 6, by deflecting with a deflector 7 an image forming light flux emitted from the image forming lens system 6, and by scanning the screen while the flux is condensed as a one-dimensional line image on the screen 9 through a scanning lens system 8. Then, in this line image scanning type picture display device, in accordance with uniform gap characteristic in the line image scanning direction caused by the deflector 7 and the scanning lens system 8, the time width of a pixel clock that shows an image signal in the optical modulator is changed by the pixel line unit, thereby compensating the uniform gap characteristic of the line image on the screen to perform the line image scanning.
