PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass substrate for a flat panel display device which is easy to melt and mold, excellent in heat impact resistance, and made from a glass of high strain point having a coefficient of thermal expansion compatible with surrounding materials. SOLUTION: This glass substrate for a flat panel display device has a composition of 55-74% SiO<SB>2</SB>, 0.5-4% Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 1-15% MgO, 0-8% CaO, 1-15% SrO, 0-5% BaO, 15-27% RO (wherein RO represents MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO), 0-8% Na<SB>2</SB>O, 2-12% K<SB>2</SB>O, 0-7% ZrO<SB>2</SB>, and 0-0.5% P<SB>2</SB>O<SB>5</SB>in mass percent, and the value of RO/Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is not smaller than 6.5.
