A printer has a printer main body (1) that comprises an image recording section (3) having a carriage (25) provided with an ink head for delivering ink to paper and a guide shaft (26) for slidably guiding the carriage (25), and a base (2) opposed to the image recording section (3) to support the image recording section (3). Formed between the image recording section (3) and the base (2) is a paper transfer path (5) for transferring paper along the paper transfer direction. Further, disposed between the image recording section (3) and the base (2) is a side opening (5c) through which paper can be inserted into the paper transfer path (5) from a direction substantially normal to the paper transfer direction.
