PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold which does not take long time and high cost in processing as a superhard alloy which is generally used for a large diameter glass lens mold. SOLUTION: In this method of manufacturing an optical element, not only the processing time is cut sharply by using as a mold an alloy steel which is capable of cutting, but also it is so structured that the press preliminary pressure will not act between the molds 2 and 3 and a lens material 5 until the lens material is softened to avoid the deformation of the mold which occurs by the lowering of the hardness of the mold by the high temperature during molding. Namely, more than one spacer 6 made of the glass material of the lens material or a glass material having a similar heat softening characteristic, etc. are located between body type 4 end surfaces and top punch type 3 flange surfaces, thus the load is carried by the spacers 6, and a space is kept between the lens material and the top punch type convex top part.
