PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for replacing grinding wheels safely and in a short time by dispensing with the manual or automatic operation of confirming the contact with the grinding wheel. SOLUTION: The grinding wheel reaching the operation limit is detached and replaced by a new one. The measurement data is read by a grinding wheel diameter measuring device, and the measured grinding wheel is mounted. The measurement data is inputted to a numerical value control device of the grinder to calculate a gap between the grinding wheel and a dresser, and according to the calculated data, the initial forming dressing is started.
