PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method of a plurality of stacker cranes in an automatic warehouse devised to improve carrying capacity of the automatic warehouse by shortening carrying time and preventing interference of the stacker cranes with each other by a simple device without providing an intermediate facility such as a special transfer and placing machine, etc. SOLUTION: Travelling of each of the stacker cranes C1, C2 is controlled so as to carry an article through transfer shelves 3A, 3B of a section L3 by specifying the transfer shelves 3A, 3B arranged on a part of storage shelves 2A, 2B of each row as the free reciprocal travelling section L3 in which two units of the stacker cranes C1, C2 are free to travel.
