<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To excellently detect a reference image transferred to an intermediate transfer body when the density of each color of a color image is controlled by detecting the density of a toner image formed on the intermediate transfer body of an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer body of the image forming apparatus is formed of a beltlike member, an image density sensor 15 is arranged at its specified position to detect the density of the reference image, and a detecting operation is carried out at a window part 11 provided to a storage case 10.
