A fuel cell system that is operated with a fuel gas and a suitable oxidant is provided with said oxidant by means of a compressor. The aim of the invention is to make sure that the oxidant is sufficiently humidified. According to the invention, the power required for evaporating water for the purpose of humidifying the oxidant is generated by the winding temperature of the compressor motor. Optionally, the fuel gas, too, can be humidified. Preferably, the fuel gas is hydrogen or a hydrogen-rich gas and ambient air is used as the oxidant. The corresponding system is provided with an electric motor, associated with the compressor, which comprises means for cooling with cooling water, the emerging cooling water being supplied to the compressor as humidifying water.
