The compression/expansion filter assembly, for the fine filtration of a fluid, has a fluid flow (1) to an inlet (2) into a liquid head zone (3). The fluid passes through a flexible perforated plate (4), and through a coarse filter layer (5) to a fine filter layer (6). On passing through the fine filter, the fluid moves through a perforated support base (7) and is held in a filtrate collection zone (9) to be taken off through an outflow (10) to the exit (11). The two filter layers are depressed for compression and lifted for expansion by a spindle shaft (8) working with the flexible perforated plate and springs/hydraulic units (13). All the component parts of the assembly are of a corrosion-resistant metal, or plastics.
