<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizer manufacturing method which is controlled so that a polyvinyl alcohol-iodine solution is not gelated upon coating and enhances the work efficiency in a coating film forming process for forming a coating film by applying the polyvinyl alcohol-iodine solution, to provide a polarizer obtained by the manufacturing method, to provide a polarizing plate using the polarizer, to provide an optical film on which the polarizer or polarizing plate is laminated and to provide a picture display device using the polarizer, polarizing plate or optical film. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizer manufacturing method includes: a mixing process of preparing the polyvinyl alcohol-iodine solution which contains at least a polyvinyl alcohol type compound, iodine and an alkali metal iodide; and a coating film forming process of forming the coating film by applying the polyvinyl alcohol-iodine solution.
