PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide steel for a metal mold for molding plastics having excellent machinability even in the case where machining is applied in a prehardened condition and also to provide steel for a metal mold for molding plastics having superior mirror finish properties in addition to excellent machinability with respect to an article requiring mirror finish properties. SOLUTION: The steel for the metal mold for molding plastics has a composition consisting, by weight, of 0.03 to 0.3% C, >1 to 3% Si, 0.05 to 3% Mn, >0.01 to 0.3% S, 0.1 to 5% Cu, 1.0 to 5% Ni, 0.02 to <3% Cr, >0.5 to 2.5% Al and the balance essentially Fe.
