PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vulcanizing adhesive composition which can effectively glue a rubber such as a nitrile rubber and an acrylic rubber on a metal plate and is satisfactorily adaptable to uses requiring resistance to liquids such as water, ethylene glycol and alcohols. SOLUTION: The vulcanizing adhesive composition comprises 5-65 wt% of an alkyl group-modified novolak-type phenolic resin and 95-35 wt% of a resol-type phenolic resin synthesized in the presence of an ammoniacal catalyst or an amine catalyst. Preferably, the vulcanizing adhesive composition further contains hexamethylenetetramine or the like as a curing agent. The vulcanizing adhesive composition is suitably employed as a phenolic adhesive for the metal plate on which the nitrile rubber or the acrylic rubber is vulcanizingly glued through the phenolic resin adhesive.
