PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new synthetic intermediate for synthesizing vitamin D compounds. SOLUTION: The intermadiate is hydrindan-4-one compound represented by formula (IV) or (V). Wherein, R2is a 1-3C alkyl, a hydroxy 1-3C alkyl, a 1-2C alkoxymethyl or a 2-3C alkenyl or alkynyl, R3is a bivalent (branched) and (saturated) aliphatic 3- to 5-membered hydrocarbon or oxahydrocarbon which have at least 3 atoms in the main chain and optionally substituted with one or more substituents selected from epoxy, fluoro and hydroxy, R4is a sec- or tert- 1-3C alkyl or a 3-6C cycloalkyl, and R5is (protected) hydroxy.
