PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-purity 3-amino-4-substituted-5-pyrazolone in a high yield, which is economically carried out on an industrial scale, takes the environment into consideration, especially has no adverse effect on photographic performance by impurities. SOLUTION: The method for producing the compound represented by general formula (II) (L is a thiocyano group, an aryloxy group, an alkoxy group, an alkylthio group, an arylthio group, a heterocyclic thio group, an imido group, an imidazolyl group, a pyrazolyl group or a triazolyl group; R<SP>1</SP>is a substitutable alkyl group or a substitutable aryl group) comprises hydrolyzing a compound represented by general formula (I) (R<SP>2</SP>s are each a substituent group; n is an integer of 0-5 and when n is≥2, R<SP>2</SP>s may be the same or different) in the presence of a barium compound by an alkali metal hydroxide and, after the reaction completion, precipitating and removing the barium compound as a halogenide.
