The wheel rim (1) for motor vehicles consists of at least one ring (3), a centre star (7) fastened in the inner region of the ring, whereby the ring has a core of a first base material. The core consists of the base material with a partial covering or coating (10) of high grade steel which is constructed as a separate preformed part and connected to the core. The rim centre star is connected to the ring by multiple screws (8) which pass through both the core and the coating of high grade steel. An independent claim is included for a method for the manufacture of a wheel rim.
