The present invention provides pharmaceutical compositions for inhibiting pathological functions of metal-dependent metalloproteases as well as for neutralizing bacterial virulence factors by employing chelators of transition metals, resulting in reduction in the availability of such metals, or by replacing the key metal ions with different ions. In addition, a use of such metalloprotease inhibitors for the manufacture of a pharmaceutical composition for the prevention or treatment of pathological conditions influenced by the action of metalloproteases is disclosed. Also methods of treatment or prevention of such conditions are disclosed. |
